About Mt. Masaraga
Mt. Masaraga in Ligao City, Albay, is a hiker's campsite and hiking destination offering panoramic views of Mayon Volcano. This inactive stratovolcano stands 1,328 meters above sea level and is part of Albay's "Magayon Trio," alongside Mt. Mayon and Mt. Malinao. It is a protected landscape and a favorite spot for campers and trekkers looking for a peaceful mountain escape in the Bicol Region.
The mountain is known for its lush slopes, forested trails, and open grasslands at the summit. Hikers pass through woodland areas and a "monkey trail" before reaching the peak, where the reward is a breathtaking view of Mayon Volcano's perfect cone, along with Mt. Asog, Mt. Isarog, and Lake Buhi on clear days. The Mt. Masaraga Campsite at the base serves as the jump-off point for the climb and is itself a destination for overnight camping. Visitors can rent tents or a small kubo (hut) and enjoy the cool, fresh mountain air, a sea of clouds at sunrise, and the serene atmosphere of the campsite.
The area is rich in biodiversity and has been the site of tree-planting activities and wildlife releases, including the Philippine Serpent Eagle, by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. A certified guide and permit are generally required to climb the mountain, and visitors should coordinate with local officials for access and safety. The dry season offers the best conditions for hiking and exploring the volcanic formations on its slopes. Whether for a day hike, an overnight camping trip, or a scenic nature retreat, Mt. Masaraga offers a memorable adventure in Albay.
