About San Miguel Island

San Miguel Island in Tabaco City, Albay, is an island destination with beaches and a marine sanctuary in the Lagonoy Gulf. This underrated coastal gem in the Bicol Region is the westernmost of Albay's island chain and is known for its unspoiled shores, clear waters, and laid-back island life.

The island is made up of five barangays—Agñas, Hacienda, Rawis, Sagurong, and Visita—and lies just a short boat ride from the Tabaco City port. Its economy is rooted in fishing, farming, basket and mat weaving, and cattle raising, giving visitors a genuine glimpse of simple coastal living. The island is best known for its protected fish sanctuary, the San Miguel Island Marine Fishery Reserve and Sanctuary, which was established in 1998 and covers 2.25 square kilometers of coral reef and marine habitat. This makes the island a great spot for snorkeling and diving, where you can see colorful schools of fish and healthy corals.

The island's beaches are a major draw. Bungkay Beach in Hacienda is known for its clear waters, white sand, and peaceful atmosphere, perfect for swimming and relaxing. Nagkaputlan Beach offers scenic views and quiet shores that are ideal for families and casual beachgoers. Boundary Beach appeals to travelers who enjoy raw, natural coastlines. The Vanishing Island, also known as Wara-Wara, is a sandbar in the Cagraray–San Miguel Strait that appears during low tide and offers crystal-clear waters and great photo opportunities. For those who want to explore the interior, San Miguel Island Camp 2 is a hiking area with views of the island's landscapes.

The island also has historical and cultural charm. Local communities still use the "sibid-sibid," a small rowboat that inhabitants have used since the 19th century for travel between sitios and the chapel. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood, interact with friendly locals, and experience a slower pace of life away from the mainland. Whether for beach hopping, snorkeling, hiking, or simply unwinding by the sea, San Miguel Island offers an authentic and memorable island escape in Albay.
