About Mayon Planetarium

The Mayon Planetarium and Science Park in Tabaco City, Albay, is a unique planetarium and geology museum at the foot of Mayon Volcano. Also known as the Virtual Mayon Simulation and Observatory Facility, this science facility sits 854 meters above sea level within the volcano's 6-kilometer permanent danger zone and was opened in March 2006.

The planetarium was built under the initiative of former congressman Edcel Lagman Sr. and is operated by the Tabaco City government. It offers an educational and fascinating look at geology, volcanology, seismology, astronomy, and the solar system, with a special focus on the history of Mayon Volcano. Visitors can explore the library, virtual reality room, mini-museum, and audiovisual hall inside the single-storey building, where photo exhibits and documentaries about volcanoes are shown. A mini-show recounts the years of Mayon's eruptions and destructions.

One of the main draws of the planetarium is its observation facilities, which provide panoramic views of nearby towns, mountains, and the majestic Mayon Volcano itself. The cool breeze at this elevation makes it a refreshing stop, and the location is a favorite spot for photographers seeking unique angles and stunning sunsets. The site is also the best place to get up close and personal with the beautiful but dangerous volcano.

The planetarium grounds cover about 1,000 square meters. While the former Mayon Rest House and restaurant are no longer operational, the area is still maintained by locals. The road to the site passes through a zigzag route, and parking is available. Entrance is free, though a small fee may apply to enter the planetarium itself. Whether for a science trip, a photography session, or simply a scenic drive, the Mayon Planetarium offers a memorable experience in Albay.
