This 52-foot pylon, also known as the Battle of Legazpi Pylon, stands at the intersection of Quezon Avenue and Rizal Street in the Legazpi Port District, right in the heart of the city's downtown area.\n\nThe monument marks the site of the bloody Battle of Legazpi, which took place on January 23, 1900, during the Philippine-American War. Around 800 Filipino revolutionaries, led by Gen. Ignacio Pawa, Col. Antero Reyes, and other local commanders, fought bravely against American troops under Brig. Gen. William Kobbe. The battle was brief but fierce, with the Filipinos using bolos against well-armed American forces. Historians recorded that 172 Filipinos, including Col. Reyes, died in the fighting. The monument was designed by Architect Ever Napay and sculpted by Mr. Manuel Samson, and it was inaugurated on January 23, 1965, during the 65th anniversary of the battle. It was built on the site of the former Puente de San Rafael, where the bloodiest last stand occurred. The National Historical Institute, now the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, declared the monument a historical structure with a national historical marker installed in 2001. Today, the monument stands as a proud symbol of Legazpeño bravery and patriotism, and annual commemorations are held here every January.
