Standing in front of the Legazpi Post Office along Quezon Avenue, this poignant memorial serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by Bicolano soldiers and civilians during World War II.\n\nThe monument's story began at the end of the war when laborers discovered the headless body of a man in a soldier's uniform at the port of Barangay Sabang, an area that had reportedly served as an execution site for Japanese forces. Moved by this grim discovery, Spanish philanthropist Don Buenaventura de Erquiaga, founder of Legazpi College (now the University of Santo Tomas–Legazpi), commissioned a statue to honor the fallen soldier and countless other war victims. The monument was originally erected at the site where the body was found, and the remains were given a proper burial. After Erquiaga's death in 1959, however, relevant documents and photographs were lost, and the statue was later transferred to its current location in front of the Legazpi Post Office.\n\nThe central figure is a sculpted soldier depicted without a head, symbolizing the unknown victims of the war and the brutality of the occupation. A plaque at the base provides a brief description of its historical significance. Though the monument has been described by some visitors as eerie due to its subject matter, it stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and valor, embodying the spirit of those who fought for freedom and justice. It is a meaningful stop for history lovers, students, and anyone wishing to remember the courage of those who gave their lives for future generations.","category":["spots"],"municipality":"Legazpi City","geo_lat":13.146337887185362,"geo_lng":123.75055057484441,"activity_tags":["Historical Tour","Photography","Sightseeing","Paying Respects","Reflection","Educational Visit","Monument Viewing","Walking Tour","Cultural Appreciation","City Tour"],"contact_info":{"phone":"+63 9000000000","email":"albaytourist@gmail.com","website":"https://albaytourist.com/"},"social_links":{"facebook":"https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61585599752475","instagram":"https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61585599752475"},"pricing_lowest":0,"operating_hours":"24/7","rating":5,"is_premium":false,"view_count":0,"fullURLMap":"<iframe src=\"https://www.google.com/maps/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d3693.01538077506!2d123.75055057484441!3d13.146337887185362!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x33a10180482ad553%3A0x20ddb30afd72610b!2sHeadless%20Monument%2C%20Lapu-Lapu%20St%2C%20Legazpi%20Port%20District%2C%20Legazpi%20City%2C%20Albay!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sph!4v1791038744787!5m2!1sen!2sph\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"></iframe>","fileSizeMB":62062,"pictureCredits":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Headless_Monument_in_Legazpi_City.jpg","creditsName":"wikimedia.org","createdAt":"2026-10-03T14:47:21.476Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-03T14:47:21.476Z"}
