Most Albay itineraries rush from Legazpi to Cagsawa and back. Camalig rewards a slower route. The town is home to Quitinday Green Hills and Sumlang Lake — two very different landscapes that fit naturally into one half-day trip.
Quitinday Green Hills
Quitinday is a cluster of rolling hills covered in grass, with ridges and valleys that frame Mayon from a low, layered angle. It is not a dramatic mountain trek. It is a walk through open countryside, with a few short climbs and wide views.
The trail is manageable for most fitness levels, but it is still an outdoor walk. Wear shoes with grip, bring water, and avoid the hills during heavy rain when the ground becomes slippery. Local guides can point out the best route and the safest viewpoints.
Best for: Landscape photography, short hikes, travelers who want a quieter alternative to the crowded viewpoints.
Sumlang Lake
Sumlang Lake is a small, calm body of water at the base of Mayon. Bamboo rafts take visitors across the lake, and on still mornings the volcano reflects on the surface. The atmosphere is relaxed: food stalls, coconut juice, and locals enjoying the shade.
The lake is community-run, so expect a simple setup rather than a resort. That is part of its charm. Go early for the best reflection and fewer visitors.
Best for: Reflections, relaxed afternoons, families, and travelers who want a break from walking.
How to combine them
A practical order is:
- Morning: Quitinday Green Hills while the air is cool and the summit is more likely to be clear.
- Late morning: Sumlang Lake for a raft ride and a snack.
- Lunch: Try pinangat in Camalig town proper.
- Afternoon: Add Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave or return to Legazpi.
The two sites are close enough to visit in one trip, but they are not a single destination. Ask your driver to wait or agree on a pickup time.
What to bring
- Water and a light snack
- Sun protection
- Shoes with grip for Quitinday
- Cash for entrance fees, raft rides, and food
- A light rain jacket during the wet season
Respect the community
These are working landscapes and local livelihoods, not just photo sets. Follow posted rules, pay the correct fees, and ask before photographing people. Take your trash with you.
Pair it with these stops
- Cagsawa Ruins for the classic Mayon view.
- Daraga Church for heritage and a hilltop panorama.
- Farm Plate Daraga for a garden meal.
- Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave for a cool underground detour.
Camalig is one of Albay's most rewarding day-trip towns precisely because it does not try too hard. Bring a little patience, and the landscape does the rest.
