Three days is enough to see the essential Albay: the volcano, the heritage towns at its base, and the coast. The trick is to base yourself in Legazpi City and keep each day focused on one direction.

This itinerary assumes you have a full day on arrival and two full days after. Adjust it around the weather and PHIVOLCS advisories.

Day 1 — Legazpi City and the classic Mayon view

Morning: Start at Ligñon Hill Nature Park for a city-and-volcano panorama. Go early, before the summit clouds build. If you want more activity, the park has zipline options and walking paths.

Late morning: Head to Daraga. Visit Cagsawa Ruins and Daraga Church. These two stops tell the story of the 1814 eruption and the heritage that survived it.

Lunch: Eat laing, pinangat, or Bicol Express in Daraga or back in Legazpi. Keep lunch relaxed — the afternoon is for a slower pace.

Afternoon: Visit the National Museum – Bicol for regional geology and archaeology, or walk around Old Albay. If you are a coffee person, find a local cafe and try pili sweets.

Evening: Food crawl in Legazpi. Try sili ice cream, then settle in for seafood or a warm bowl of soup.

Where to stay: Legazpi City is the most practical base. Browse hotels in Albay or inns for smaller budgets.

Day 2 — Camalig's green hills and quiet water

Morning: Drive to Camalig and start at Sumlang Lake. Take a bamboo raft ride while the water is calm and Mayon is still visible.

Late morning: Continue to Quitinday Green Hills for a short trek. The rolling hills offer a different, more layered view of the volcano. Wear shoes with grip and bring water.

Lunch: Try pinangat in Camalig — the town is known for it — or eat at a local farm-and-garden restaurant.

Afternoon: Visit Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave, a limestone cave with guided tours and a history of community use during wartime. The cool interior is a nice break from the heat.

Evening: Return to Legazpi. Keep dinner simple and early if you plan to chase sunrise the next day.

Day 3 — The coast and Tabaco

Morning: Head east to Bacacay. Choose a beach or island activity — Misibis Bay for a resort day, or a quieter public shore for a local experience. If you prefer a view over the sea, continue north to Tabaco City.

Late morning: In Tabaco, visit the heritage church and the port area, then take the road toward Mayon Skyline if conditions allow. Access can change with volcanic activity, so check locally.

Lunch: Seafood near the coast. Ask what is fresh that day.

Afternoon: Return to Legazpi for souvenir shopping — pili nuts, chili paste, and local sweets. If time allows, catch one last view of Mayon from the city.

Evening: Fly out or continue to Sorsogon, Camarines Sur, or Masbate.

Practical tips

  • Do not overpack Day 1. Travel times in Albay are short, but traffic and weather can stretch them.
  • Check PHIVOLCS daily. Mayon is active. Alert levels may affect viewpoints, ATV trails, and high-elevation roads.
  • Hire a local driver for Day 2. Camalig's stops are easier with a vehicle, and a local driver can adjust the order based on weather.
  • Bring cash. Entrance fees, parking, and small eateries often prefer cash.
  • Leave room for spontaneity. The best Mayon view is often the one you did not plan.

If you have more time

Add a fourth day for the beaches of Rapu-Rapu or a longer stay in Bacacay. You can also slow down in Legazpi and spend an afternoon at a cafe or market instead of chasing another stop.
